Officials in Lima, Peru, are planning the implementation of a bus rapid transit (BRT) operation to professionalize the city’s public transit operations. Lima, with a population of 9 million, does not have an organized public transportation system. Transportation services are provided by route concessionaires, individual businessmen with small and old buses, creating congestion and contamination. The proposed BRT system will include 150-passenger extended buses for trunk routes and conventional buses (80 to 100 passengers) for feeder routes. The municipality of Lima will regulate the system, which will be administered by an entity that will plan, supervise and prepare the bids for the needed services.
