London Underground unions suspend strike

LONDON — Rail, Maritime & Transport union and Transport Salaried Staffs’ Association leaders called off a two-day strike on the London Underground on Tuesday, pending further discussions on halting proposed staff cuts, Bloomberg reported.
The unions want to overturn Mayor Boris Johnson’s plan to remove ticket booths as riders switch to paying fares with Oyster cards that open gates automatically. The plan would keep offices open at five subway stations in addition to the Heathrow station.
Transport for London, which oversees the London Underground, told the news outlet that more staff members would be placed on platforms and concourses and that all stops would be manned while trains run. For the full story, click here.
