Mechanics agree to deal, end strike at Montreal Transit
First transit strike in 14 years ends after one week when maintenance workers agree to a new deal almost unanimously.
A one-week transit strike by mechanics for Montreal Transit Corp. ended this week after maintenance workers voted overwhelmingly to accept a new deal.
More than 90 percent of the approximately 2,000 striking workers voted to accept the agency’s offer. Full subway and bus service was restored by Monday morning.
Workers walked off the job on Nov. 16 over wage and pension disputes. Under an agreement with Quebec's Essential Services Council, transit workers had provided limited rush-hour service during the week.
Montreal Transit Corp. is the second transit agency in Metro magazine’s top five North American transit bus fleets to settle a major mechanics strike this month. Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority ended a month-long strike Nov. 19.
The walkout was the first transit strike in Montreal in 14 years.
