CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — Some Chapel Hill residents are debating the effect that private transit services are having on public transportation, including the use public stops and redundancy of services, The Daily Tar Heel reported.

The LUX at Central Park shuttles are a private service for residents of a local apartment complex catering to university students. The service, which transports LUX residents to areas all around campus and back to the apartments, includes two private shuttles with routes that coincide with major public transit routes, including Chapel Hill Transit’s university-based routes, the paper reported.

The LUX service has also been criticized for using bus-only lanes and blocking access to bus stops, which Chapel Hill Transit officials say is under investigation, according to The Daily Tar Heel.
