David Gunn, who previously ran transit systems in New York City and Washington, was named president of Amtrak. Gunn, who has 38 years of rail experience, will take over the position on May 15 from E.S. "Stan" Bagley Jr., who is serving as acting president and CEO. Bagley, a 28-year veteran of the company, is currently executive vice president of operations. Some of Gunn's experience includes working for transit systems in Boston and Philadelphia before taking over the New York City subway system in 1984. Gunn previously headed up both the largest transit system in the United States and in Canada, serving as president of New York City Transit from 1984 to 1990 and as chief general manager of the Toronto Transit Commission from 1995 to 1999. Gunn was also general manager of the Washington Metro from 1991 to 1994, where he began a program to rebuild subway cars and buy new buses. More recently, Gunn has served as a transportation and government consultant.
