The Central Ohio Transit Authority (COTA) is adding audio capability to its onboard security cameras that are installed on all buses in its fleet.
"The safety and security of our employees and customers is our number one priority," said Bill Lhota, COTA president/CEO. "By utilizing audio technology in addition to our security cameras, we can improve our response to disruptive incidents while also reducing the potential for unsafe situations."
In addition to enabling law enforcement to identify individuals who engage in illegal behavior on transit vehicles, cameras serve as a deterrent. Audio will serve as an additional discouragement, allowing COTA to provide passengers better service along with a more secure and enjoyable experience.
The agency employs a variety of methods to maximize the safety and security of customers and employees in addition to security cameras, including uniformed and undercover police officers who routinely ride buses and use K-9 units to search for illegal substances.
Originally introduced in 2023 as the Bus Line Redesign, the effort has evolved into a more targeted update that maintains familiar routes while improving reliability, frequency, evening and weekend service, and connections across Allegheny County.
