The Regional Transportation Commission (RTC) of Washoe County in Reno, Nev., has successfully migrated Vontas’ OnRoute CAD/AVL system to the Vontas Cloud platform.

Completed over a period of five months, the project also included an upgrade of OnRoute, now equipped with real-time General Transit Feed Specifications (GTFS-RT) capabilities that enables the agency to provide real-time transit information to passenger systems.

Vontas is excited to continue our partnership with the RTC of Washoe County as they deliver an exceptional passenger experience,” says Ed Baldzicki, VP, sales, at Vontas. “The migration to Vontas Cloud represents a substantial stride in the agency’s dedication to keep riders informed on their journeys while enhancing security and compliance measures.”

RTC’s Transition to Vontas CAD/AVL

By transitioning their OnRoute transit software operations to Vontas Cloud, RTC reduces the IT resource burden associated with maintaining on-premises infrastructure and gains access to a range of functionalities.

Microsoft Azure is Vontas cloud platform of choice for hosting and managed services, which offers virtual machines, durable and highly available storage, managed database services, secure and scalable network architecture, identity and access management, comprehensive monitoring, backup and disaster recovery options, and world-class security and compliance.

With Vontas Cloud, the RTC benefits from a reduced total cost of ownership for IT environments and streamlined backup processes, resulting in minimal downtime during disruptions and minimizing data loss. Recognizing the importance of cybersecurity for transit agencies, Vontas Cloud incorporates robust measures such as role-based access control, multifactor authentication, and regular security audits, ensuring the utmost protection of data and sensitive information.

The Vontas Integration

The integration of GTFS-RT with OnRoute brings enhanced efficiency to schedule adherence and real-time transit information dissemination to downstream passenger systems.

"Vontas uses the power of GTFS-RT to keep passengers well-informed throughout their journeys," added Baldzicki. "With this upgrade, the agency can now empower riders to track the live locations of their buses, minimizing perceived wait times and alleviating trip uncertainty."

“The RTC has a long history of being a leader in public transit innovation and continues to be at the forefront of technology advances in transportation," said James Gee, manager, service planning and innovation, at the RTC of Washoe County. "The RTC looks forward to our continued partnership with Vontas which has allowed us to upgrade our technology to the cloud which will improve operations, passenger satisfaction, and ensure data safety.”
