To celebrate the 10th anniversary of the SPRINTER hybrid rail system, the North County Transit District (NCTD) of San Diego announced that it will hold pop-up events throughout the year at various SPRINTER stations. The events are a community outreach effort aimed at growing ridership and educating riders about the SPRINTER.
The SPRINTER launched in 2008, and has served 15 stations along a 22-mile route from Escondido to Oceanside.
The cost for construction of the SPRINTER, including the construction of its maintenance facility and vehicles, totaled $477 million. The SPRINTER has an annual ridership of 2.5 million, with an average weekday ridership of 8,400. The level boarding at each station makes it fully ADA-accessible.
The region’s fixed-route system finished out the year with a total of 373.5 million rides. Adding 12.3 million rides over 2024 represents an increase that is equal to the annual transit ridership of Kansas City.
