Canada-based transit authority Go Transit has chosen Siemens Transportation Systems (TS) to upgrade its entire signaling and communication system in and around Toronto’s Union Station and the traffic control center.

The new traffic control center will have a new operations control system, performing the monitoring and operation of the interlockings, as well as functions such as automatic train tracking, timetable management and automatic route setting. The system covers a section of 3.6 miles, containing about 26 miles of track. When the work is finished, Union Station will be the largest station in North America to be equipped with electronic interlockings. At the final stage, the new technology will control 250 switches and 170 signals. The upgrade will take place in 2008.
Siemens also won a $31 million contract to construct nine S70 low-floor light rail vehicles for Hampton Road Transit (HRT) in Norfolk, Va.
