Skanska USA was awarded a $66 million contract from the Washington Metro Area Transit Authority (Metro) to design and construct a test track, commissioning facility, parking garage and other facilities near the existing Greenbelt Maintenance Yard in Prince George’s County, Md. The new facility will allow Metro to conduct testing and commission new and rehabilitated rail vehicles.
The project includes design and construction of an approximately 10,000-linear-foot-long test track with traction power, automatic train control and a 50-foot long mock platform. It also includes a commissioning facility, providing space for work on up to eight cars at one time, and will include an overhead crane, traction power, and an embedded and pedestal rail. A second floor space will house offices and a conference room. Skanska will also construct a 320-space parking garage.
The Skanska team will be responsible for program and quality control management, design, permitting, and development of manuals and training guides.
Construction work will include excavation and grading, utility relocation and installation, asphalt and concrete paving, lighting, erosion control, and hardscape and landscape.
The facility is being constructed to be able to receive LEED Silver Certification.
The project will start in July and is expected to be completed in March 2014.
