NEW YORK CITY — The popularity of handheld electronic devices such as iPads or Kindle readers has resulted in an increase in thefts on public transit systems across the U.S. New York City Transit Authority reports subway crime has risen 17 percent so far in 2011, with about 1,000 riders the victims of larceny.
