BURLINGTON, Vermont — During the past decade, while University of Vermont student commuters have shifted in large numbers to carpools and buses, university employees have been slower to abandon their cars, reported the Burlington Free Press.
Indulging staff and faculty motorists with cheap and easy parking is a university policy that wastes precious space and stalls efforts to reduce carbon pollution, said Richard Watts, director of UVM’s Center for Research on Vermont, according to the report. UVM’s approximately 5,200 parking spots could be whittled down to make room for other amenities, or green space, he said.
Surveys conducted between 2003 and 2016 show the number of student car commuters who drove alone fell to 25% from 75%, while staff and faculty drive-alone commutes dropped from 59% to 53%, reported the Burlington Free Press.
