LUXEMBOURG — The European Union’s top court ruled that Uber should be classified as a transport service and regulated like other taxi operators, a decision that is unlikely to have an immediate impact on the ride-hailing company, Reuters reports.

The case stemmed from a complaint filed by a professional taxi drivers association in Barcelona that Uber was engaging in misleading practices and unfair competition due to its use of non-professional drivers, the report said.

Uber argued that its app acts an intermediary between drivers and passengers and should fall under lighter rules, according to the Reuters report.
