Virginia Beach to get BRT system
Governor scheduled to announce $15 million in state funds for the project.
Virginia Gov. Mark R. Warner is expected to announce this Friday that $15 million in state money has been allotted for a bus rapid transit (BRT) project in Virginia Beach.
According to the Virginia Pilot, the $35 million project will also receive $12 million from the city and $8 million in federal funds.
The money, which still must be approved by the state legislature, is part of the governor’s new transportation funding package.
The proposed BRT system includes 20 buses and 29 stops along a six-mile line. It could be ready by 2007, in time for the opening of Virginia Beach’s new $200 million convention center.
