Wabtec Corp.’s MotivePower subsidiary has been awarded a $217 million contract to build commuter and option locomotives for GO Transit in Toronto. According to Wabtec, the contract includes 27 new commuter locomotives for $112 million and 26 option locomotives for $105 million. The units will be manufactured at MotivePower’s Boise, Idaho, facility beginning in 2006. Deliveries are scheduled for 2007 and ’08. The streamlined locomotives will feature significant technological improvements, including higher-horsepower engines to increase acceleration, greater fuel efficiency and reduced emissions. Ontario’s only interregional transit system, GO Transit links the city of Toronto with the surrounding areas and carries 45 million passengers per year by train and bus.
