A joint venture led by Washington Group International was awarded a $600.4 million contract Monday to design and build a six-mile extension to the Metro Gold Line light rail system in Los Angeles. Construction on the new line--named the Metro Gold Line Eastside Extension--is scheduled for completion in 2009 and will run from Union Station in downtown Los Angeles to Pomona Boulevard. Some four miles of the dual-line extension will be constructed at ground level or on bridges or other structures and almost two miles in 21-foot-diameter twin tunnels. The project also includes two underground stations, six aboveground stations, and installation of the overhead catenary system, along with considerable excavation, and signaling and communication systems.
