The Routing Company (TRC) is launching an on-demand transit service in partnership with New York’s Rochester-Genesee Regional Transportation Authority (RGRTA), also known as Regional Transit Service (RTS).

The deployment marks one of the largest on-demand transit implementations in North America, setting a new benchmark for public transportation accessibility and connectivity, TRC said.

Bringing On Demand to Rochester

TRC is enabling RTS’ new weekday demand-responsive transit service that includes on-demand (microtransit) and deviated route services operated from seven properties across all the rural counties surrounding Rochester, including Wayne, Ontario, Livingston, Wyoming, Genesee, Seneca, and Orleans. Pre-booking will also be available to riders.

The service has already successfully launched in Seneca, Genesee, Orleans, Ontario, and Wyoming, with services in Wayne and Livingston being launched by Spring.

RTS is a New York State public-benefit corporation providing public transportation across an eight-county region in and around Rochester, delivering over 10 million rides annually.

Through this partnership, TRC’s cutting-edge Pingo platform powers a service that bridges mobility gaps, particularly in rural and underserved communities, offering real-time ride booking and optimized routing to enhance rider convenience and efficiency.

“Finding new and innovative ways to meet the growing needs of our customers is a constant effort for the RTS team and our work with The Routing Company is the latest example of that,” said RTS CEO Miguel Velázquez. “Partnering with The Routing Company is helping us expand service and improve the overall experience of our customers in the rural areas we serve, while giving our team the tools they need to successfully carry out our mission.”

Launching at a Pivotal Time

The launch arrives at a pivotal time, as transit agencies increasingly turn to on-demand solutions to address transit gaps and expand service coverage.

According to TRC’s recently published State of On-Demand Transit Report, the adoption of on-demand models is accelerating across North America, with agencies seeking innovative ways to extend networks and improve accessibility.

Looking forward, TRC envisions on-demand transit becoming a cornerstone of modern mobility solutions.

“This service launch is just the beginning,” said James Cox, TRC’s CEO. “We’re committed to working with transit agencies across North America to make on-demand transit a proven and essential component of public transportation networks.”

The Pingo platform, which includes the Drive Pingo and Ride Pingo apps and the Pingo Dashboard operations tool, has powered nearly two million trips to date, helping agencies deliver efficient, flexible, and scalable transit services.
