Capital Metro (Austin, Texas) is deploying digital security camera systems in more than 100 buses as part of its commitment to public safety. The cameras are mounted in the buses at various strategic points to prevent crime, reduce liability and provide Capital Metro riders with a safer riding experience. "We have made a commitment to ensure our public transportation system is reliable and efficient. But it is also a top priority for Capital Metro to be safe and secure for our customers," said Fred Gilliam, president and CEO of Capital Metro. Buses equipped with the video system will record on-board events automatically once the vehicle is started. The system also features wireless technology to transmit images from buses in near-real-time to personnel at headquarters. Capital Metro will equip 120 buses with four to seven cameras at a cost of $560,000. Purchase of the digital video security system was made possible by a federal grant.
