Caterpillar Inc. is retrofitting 16 transit buses for the city of Asheville, N.C. The retrofit donations were announced as part of a clean-diesel program in Asheville Wednesday sponsored by the Diesel Technology Forum. Retrofit technology is an emissions solution for older diesel engines that may not meet the same standards as newer diesel engines. The projects supported by Caterpillar in Buncombe County represent the retrofit solutions available nationwide under the Diesel Emissions Reduction Program, which was enacted as part of the Energy Policy Act of 2005. The 16 buses to be retrofitted are part of the Asheville Transit System fleet. Company dealer Carolina Cat will install diesel oxidation catalysts on the buses. The Caterpillar retrofit technology to be installed typically may reduce particulate matter emissions by 20%, hydrocarbons by 60% and carbon monoxide emissions by 85%.
