DETROIT — The M-1 Rail streetcar line will get an additional $12.2 million in funding through the FTA’s TIGER grant program, reported the Detroit Free Press.
The funding, which had been anticipated by M-1 officials, helps to plug what could have been a hole in funding for the streetcar line’s estimated $140-million construction cost and its operating revenues later. For the full story, click here.
Matthew P. Cullen, M-1 Rail president/CEO released the following statement:
“We are thrilled by the news of the TIGER award, which is so important to the M-1 RAIL project. Because of this support and the support from all of our donors and partners, M-1 RAIL is on its way to becoming an engine of economic growth that propels this entire city and region forward. I want to offer our deepest thanks to Secretary Foxx and the USDOT for their commitment to this project and to Detroit, to Mayor Duggan and the City of Detroit for being an essential partner in this application, and to our extraordinary Congressional Delegation who championed this funding.”
The region’s fixed-route system finished out the year with a total of 373.5 million rides. Adding 12.3 million rides over 2024 represents an increase that is equal to the annual transit ridership of Kansas City.
