Earth Tech people mover wins engineering award
APM replaced Toronto airport buses.
The Consulting Engineers of Ontario presented Earth Tech Inc., a business unit of Tyco International Ltd., with its Award of Merit for engineering excellence of the automated people mover (APM) at Toronto Pearson International Airport.
The APM system, which began operation last July, replaced buses that provided transportation between airport terminals and remote parking lots.
In the future, the APM will also provide access to airport developments, including a proposed rapid transit link from Pearson International to downtown Toronto and the Greater Toronto Area transit system. Earth Tech’s team led the planning, design and general review during construction of the APM system, which included three stations and 1,610-foot dual elevated guideways.
To date, the APM system is the longest application of the Doppelmayr Cable Car ropeway technology, with the highest travel speed of 26.8 mph.
