Herzog wins $32M PTC contract
The NCTD board of directors approved the contract at a recent meeting and Herzog received the "notice to proceed" with Phase 1 of PTC system development in August.
The North County Transit District (NCTD) of Oceanside, Calif., recently awarded a $32 million contract to Herzog Technologies Inc. to install Positive Train Control (PTC) to improve safety on COASTER trains.
The NCTD Board of Directors approved the contract at a recent meeting and Herzog received the "notice to proceed" with Phase 1 of PTC system development in August.
The NCTD PTC system will fully integrate with other PTC systems that will be installed on adjacent rail lines, such as Metrolink, BNSF Railway, Amtrak and Pacific Sun to ensure smooth interoperability along the coastal rail line.
PTC is a proactive system of signal enforcement designed to prevent rail accidents by identifying potential upcoming track hazards and alerting the train operator through a digital on-board display unit. If the operator does not respond to the warning, PTC will slow or stop the train automatically, taking into consideration the weight and length of a train, track geometry and braking algorithms.
