Honolulu's public bus workers strike
The island's last bus strike occurred in 1971.
The union representing 1,300 bus workers serving Honolulu and the rest of Oahu went on strike Tuesday, stranding tens of thousands of morning commuters, reported the Associated Press. Representatives of the workers and Oahu Transit Services Inc. failed to come to an agreement during negotiations held Monday. Transit workers are seeking higher wages and benefits, demands that the company says it is unable to grant since the bus system faces a budget shortfall of $6.8 million, said the AP. The Teamsters Union representing the bus workers, originally seeking a 10% wage increase for the next three years, proposed a 2% to 3% increase during negotiations Monday. The island's last bus strike occurred in 1971.
