INDIANAPOLIS — Indiana transit officials and a group of business leaders say, despite resistance from Republican leaders, they still plan to lobby the General Assembly to put a referendum before voters within the next two years to fund a $2.4 billion transit plan, Indystar.com reports.

Republicans say that the timing isn't right to ask for tax increases for transit, with a projected $1 billion state budget deficit. However, supporters counter, waiting may put IndyGo, the Indianapolis bus agency, on life support. The agency barely made it through this year without cutting service and raising fares.
