Indiana University (IU) in Bloomington is gathering a huge amount of data from students, faculty and staff about their transportation usage in and around the campus.
The survey collects information about how students, faculty and staff get to and from campus, as well as how they get around after they’ve arrived. It also asks them about the direction from which they approach the campus and their arrival and departure times.

Indiana University (IU) in Bloomington is gathering a huge amount of data from students, faculty and staff about their transportation usage in and around the campus.
Kent McDaniel, executive director of IU’s transportation services, said the survey, prepared by a contractor, was sent to 58,000 e-mail addresses in the transportation database. Within a week, about 10,000 responses had been received, McDaniel said.
The survey collects information about how students, faculty and staff get to and from campus, as well as how they get around after they’ve arrived. It also asks them about the direction from which they approach the campus and their arrival and departure times.
McDaniel said the survey is not designed to assess the scheduling and routing of the campus bus service, although bus-related questions are included. “I do hope and expect that the results will be valuable to us as we look at broader and long-term transportation planning issues,” he said.
