According to the Port Authority of Allegheny County (PAAC), the average number of riders on Pittsburgh's buses and trains in September increased 5.6% over the same month last year.
The PAAC said it provided an average of 259,765 rides per weekday last month, an increase of nearly 14,000 over September 2004.
According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the increased ridership is attributable to surging gas prices.
The figures represent the highest ridership for the city in almost four years.
