The California High Speed Rail Authority (CHSRA) unveiled a tentative map this week of routes for a proposed statewide bullet train, on which they hope to begin construction by 2008.
Using 200-mph trains, the $35 billion rail network would carry an estimated 68 million passengers a year along a 700-mile system by 2020. Voters will decide a bond measure in 2006 to pay for part of the project.
The preliminary map includes routes from Sacramento to Bakersfield, Los Angeles to San Diego and the Bay Area to San Jose. The CHSRA board will make a final vote on all routes in December.
