Md.’s Montgomery County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) awarded GILLIG a contract for 10 battery-electric buses. The contract has a minimum value of $8 million.

The 10 new electric buses will be assigned to MCDOT’s Silver Spring depot and service most routes operated from this location. The service areas will include Rockville, White Flint, Glenmont, Wheaton, Briggs Chaney, Burtonsville, Silver Spring, Takoma Park, and Bethesda.

“These electric buses are a clean option that will allow us to maintain excellent service and help us achieve a zero-emissions transit fleet by 2035,” said MCDOT Director Chris Conklin.

The buses are built on GILLIG’s proven low-floor platform design and feature Cummins propulsion systems. In developing the product, GILLIG has put the buses through rigorous engineering validation testing, including most recently at the Larson Transportation Institute's Bus Research and Testing Center located in Altoona, Pa.

GILLIG’s deep experience with electrification dates to 2001 with development of an electric trolley bus. For the next two decades, GILLIG perfected electrification technologies in its hybrid and battery electric product offerings.
