Miami 'SMART' plan could add 6 new rail lines
Although no timetable or funding source have been identified, the new transit lines would offer commuters new options to get to downtown Miami.
MIAMI — Miami-Dade’s Metropolitan Planning Organization, a central planning board made up of both elected officials from county and various city governments, agreed to pursue the Strategic Miami Area Rapid Transit plan (SMART) — an ambitious idea that calls for the construction of six new rail lines throughout the county, the Miami Herald reports.
Although no timetable or funding source have been identified, the new transit lines would offer commuters new options to get to downtown Miami. All six of the SMART lines were originally included in Miami-Dade Transit’s rail expansion plan that voters passed in 2002, however, the money generated from that sales tax paid for a 2.4 mile rail extension to Miami International Airport and a backlog of maintenance work on the system’s existing equipment.
