The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) announced transit crews completed functional and aesthetic upgrades at Hunters Point Ave 7 subway station in Long Island City, Queens, and Avenue J BQ subway station in Midwood, Brooklyn.
This work is part of New York City Transit (NYCT)’s Re-NEW-vation Program which utilizes planned service outages to perform station-wide repairs, enhancements, and deep cleaning.
At Hunters Point Ave station, NYCT workers completely rebuilt wall tilling along station stairway entrances and platforms.
Tripping hazards due to wear and tear forming cracks in the station floors were smoothed over and repaired. Mats were placed over flooring that has traditionally become slippery during rain and snow conditions.
Workers also stripped, primed, and repainted station surfaces providing customers with a freshly painted environment from the stairway entrance all the way to the platforms, including 86 track columns.
Platform benches were also sanded and refinished. Additionally, workers installed or replaced light fixtures to brighten darkened areas.
At Avenue J station, workers scrapped and repainted station ceilings, walls, columns, and entrances brightening the entire station.
Platform sheds were wiped clean of graffiti with a fresh coat of paint.
Workers removed outdated signage and repaired lighting along platforms. Overgrown vegetation was trimmed back from the station. Canopy gutters were cleaned to prevent leaks onto the platform during heavy rainstorms.
"Customers are experiencing brighter and cleaner Hunters Point Ave and Avenue J stations thanks to the great work of NYCT’s Re-NEW-vation crew,” said NYC Transit President Richard Davey. “Providing better station environments is intrinsic to NYCT’s North Star of delivering faster, cleaner, and safer service every single day.”
In October, NYCT announced it had delivered on its promised goal to complete re-NEW-vations at 50 subway stations by the end of the year.
The project represents a significant milestone in the agency’s ongoing efforts to enhance connectivity, activate publicly owned land, and create walkable communities centered around transit.
