The Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) board of directors has unanimously given the general manager authority to award an up to $3.8 million contract to Beltsville, Md.-based SunEdison LLC, which will install a canopy made out of solar panels in one of the station’s parking lots.
The agreement will save riders and taxpayers a projected $3.4 million over 20 years in energy costs and may provide some customers at the Orinda station with shaded parking.
During the daylight hours, the panels will supply the station with nearly all its electrical needs.
The trains will run off a separate power source and will not use solar electricity.
The contract also contains plans to install solar panels on the roofs of two other BART facilities — the Richmond and Hayward maintenance shops.
