Every three hours a person or vehicle is hit by a train in the U.S., according to OLI. The nonprofit said its mission is to empower the public to make safe choices when driving or walking near tracks and trains.

OLI’s 2021 Annual Report has information on new rail safety materials, grant projects, and events throughout the year, including the organization’s Virtual Leadership Conference, which drew more than 360 registrants. Other highlights of the report are the 2021 audited financial statement and results from the annual observance of Rail Safety Week, as well as recognition of Operation Lifesaver’s dedicated volunteers.

“Thanks to the active engagement of Operation Lifesaver’s volunteers, state programs, board members, and public and private partners, 2021 saw the organization thrive in the post-pandemic normal,” said Rachel Maleh, Operation Lifesaver Inc. executive director. “I am proud of OLI’s work, and of the staff who made it happen."
