The Port Authority today announced the start of cellphone service in underground PATH stations. Phased-in connectivity from major cell phone carriers will continue over the course of the rest of the year and into early 2019.

As of today, AT&T and T-Mobile cellular service is available in PATH’s New York underground stations. The AT&T and T-Mobile cell service will expand to New Jersey’s PATH stations in the next three weeks. Verizon Wireless and Sprint customers will see system-wide cellular service in both New York and New Jersey’s underground PATH stations early next year.

Cellular connectivity will be available on platforms and throughout underground stations.

Expanded cellphone service at underground PATH stations is part of a new focus by the Port Authority on customer service programs and technological improvements across its facilities. These have included a series of mobile apps including RidePath, which enables passengers to more easily plan their trips and receive service alerts. PATH has also begun testing countdown clocks at PATH stations that will inform passengers when the next train will arrive. Last month, the agency added free unlimited, high-speed Wi-Fi services at its four commercial airports.

The PATH stations in New York with the new cellular coverage are: 33rd, 23rd, 14th, 9th, and Christopher streets. The World Trade Center PATH station has had cellular coverage since it opened in 2016.

In New Jersey, the underground stations that will get cellular service are Hoboken, Exchange Place, Newport and Grove Street. PATH’s Journal Square, Harrison and Newark Penn Station are above ground and have existing cellular service.
