As Southern Nevadans continue to feel the impact of losing Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits during the prolonged government shutdown, the Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada (RTC) has donated more than 10,000 free transit passes to area residents and local nonprofits.
Giving Back to the Community
RTC officials said the agency will continue to provide bus passes as needed to organizations that serve clients who require transportation to access food and essential services.
Nonprofit and government agencies that have received donated bus passes include:
Three Square Food Bank and its pantry partners.
Nevada HAND, a nonprofit provider of affordable housing and resident services to low-income individuals.
Southern Nevada Regional Housing Authority and its family of properties
Transportation Security Administration.
“Ensuring our community has access to food pantries and essential services during these difficult times is a priority for RTC,” said MJ Maynard, RTC CEO. “As our region’s transit provider, we are committed to the well-being of all residents by helping them stay connected to work, school, medical appointments, and loved ones. Especially during this challenging time, it takes all of us to ensure our community can reach the critical resources and life-saving nutrition they need.”
RTC, in collaboration with its community partners, has developed the Southern Nevada Healthy Food Access Map, which allows individuals to customize the online map according to their specific needs. Specifically, users can select meal sites and food pantries that are accessible via public transportation.
