A planning board of the San Diego Association of Governments has endorsed the city’s proposal for a bus rapid transit project. Currently, transit planners are trying to decide on which BRT features the system should include. They are considering exclusive bus lanes at intersections and special “T” lights (for “Transit”) to allow buses to leave earlier than other vehicles. Ultimately, however, the BRT system will depend on a 40-year extension of a half-cent sales tax for transportation improvements. The extension, which requires a two-thirds majority vote, will go on the ballot in November.
