Siemens Transportation Systems Inc. (STS) has shipped the first of 16 S70 light rail vehicles that Charlotte (N.C.) Area Transit System (CATS) will use for its LYNX Blue Line rapid transit service. "Charlotte's plans for more transit alternatives will help ensure successful growth and protect the quality of life for its citizens," said Oliver Hauck, president and CEO of Siemens Transportation Systems Inc., in a statement. "The arrival of our S70 light rail vehicles advances the city's efforts in building a more balanced transportation solution." The S70, a 70% low-floor light rail vehicle, is capable of speeds up to 65 mph and features room for 236 passengers. The car shells are constructed of low-alloy, high-tensile steel with a composite fiberglass covering, which according to the company, produces a higher structural efficiency and reduces energy consumption during operation.
