The Kansas City Area Transportation Authority (KCATA) awarded a regional radio/intelligent transportation system (ITS) contract to the Integrated Local Government division of Siemens Transportation Systems Inc., a subsidiary of Siemens AG. The installation will include a new radio system, automatic vehicle location software based on differential global positioning and a schedule adherence program for more than 300 service vehicles. Siemens will also provide KCATA with computer-aided dispatching; automatic passenger counters; an ADA-compliant automatic vehicle announcement system designed for individuals who are hearing or visually impaired; and real-time arrival signs that provide exact arrival times to customers at bus stops and terminals via wireless-networked electronic signs. KCATA currently operates 54 fixed-route bus routes and six demand response routes.
