Smiths Detection wins N.Y. MTA security contract
System integrates chemical sensors with security cameras.
Smiths Detection announced its Smiths Detection–LiveWave business unit has been awarded a $3.2 million contract to engineer and deploy an advanced security solution for the New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA). The program, funded by the MTA and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, involves the integration of chemical sensors and security camera systems in New York City-area transit stations. Smiths Detection will subcontract the U.S. Department of Energy's Argonne National Laboratory to implement the company's "PROTECT" (Program for Response Options and Technology Enhancements for Chemical and Biological Terrorism). PROTECT was initially deployed for the MTA prior to the 2004 Republican National Convention. This contract will expand PROTECT into other areas for the MTA and has already been deployed in several other major U.S. transit systems.
