SoundTransit opens light rail facility
Agency prepares for 2009 launch of system.
In a ceremony on Monday, Sound Transit of Seattle opened the operations and maintenance facility for its still-under construction light rail system. The opening of the new facility sets the stage for the start of intensive testing of the light rail system and its vehicles, which are set to begin service in 2009. The new 160,000-square-foot facility sits on 25 acres in Seattle’s SoDo district and offers the long-term capacity to accommodate the operations and maintenance of more than 100 light rail vehicles. Additionally, the facility’s storage yard is capable of accommodating Sound’s initial fleet of 35 vehicles, with room for growth as the system expands.
