OAKLAND, Calif. — East Bay Express reported that the Oakland City Council approved a consultant contract to study the viability of an extended “Free B” shuttle route and electric streetcar system. An economic development specialist for the city told the paper that the goal of the project is to connect transit hubs, such as Amtrak and Bay Area Rapid Transit stations, and commercial centers in the city. Mayor Jean Quan also wants to elevate the city’s regional presence.
Until 1958, Oakland had a streetcar system that brought passengers from across the city to its Western edge, where they could take ferries or commuter rail to San Francisco. For the full story, click here.
