Terror alert level reduced for transit
A month after London suicide bombings, U.S. officials decide to reduce alert to Yellow, or high.
A little more than a month after bus and train bombings in London forced the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to upgrade the nation's terror alert level, the threat was reduced from Code Orange (high) to Code Yellow (elevated).
DHS Secretary Michael Chertoff said at the time that the July 7 alert increase, which prompted surges in police presence and random searches on trains and buses, applied only to public transit systems.
According to the Bergen County Record, some agencies have announced that the lowered status will not affect heightened security measures.
New Jersey Transit Police Chief Joseph Bober told the paper that the agency will continue providing a level of security consistent with an Orange Alert for an unspecified time.
The alert level was raised just hours after bombs were detonated on three trains and a double-decker bus, killing about 50 people and injuring more than 700.
