WHITEWATER, Wis. — On Nov. 4, the majority of University of Wisconsin-Whitewater students voted no on a referendum that would have paved the way for a proposed bus route linking the university with Janesville, GazetteXtra.com reports. The non-binding referendum was largely viewed as a make-or-break for the tri-city bus line, but some hope that the close vote will encourage more consideration.

The nearby towns of Janesville and Milton consider the service an opportunity to promote economic growth between the communities. Milton doesn't have public transportation, and Mayor Tom Chesmore viewed the bus line as an option not only for college students living there but also for the city's elderly population.
