Union Switch & Signal (US&S) has started the installation of the final phase of New Jersey Transit's (NJT) rail safety system merging two systems--continuous cab signaling and positive train stop (PTS). The combined technology is now known as the advanced speed enforcement system (ASES). During the final phase, US&S will add the ASES wayside technology system-wide, involving an additonal 434 track miles of NJ Transit territory. US&S will also equip an additional 63 passenger cars and 71 locomotives with ASES cab equipment. Continuous cab signaling (CCS) uses electrical impulses in the rail to send a continuous signal through the train's computer to the engineer in the locomotive. In addition to CCS protection, PTS provides an engineer with profiled stop information in the cab car or locomotive that will also control the train's movements if an engineer fails to respond appropriately.
