University presidents support Michigan transit expansion tax

An opposition group asserts that Ann Arbor Area Transportation Authority could operate more efficiently by cutting staff and other costs.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — MLive reported that the presidents of the University of Michigan, Eastern Michigan University (EMU) and Washtenaw Community College are endorsing a 0.7-mill tax proposal, which will expand Ann Arbor Area Transportation Authority’s (AATA) services in Ann Arbor, Ypsilanti and Ypsilanti Township.

EMU President Susan Martin said the AAATA has been a valuable community resource and active partner with the university, and that the proposed expansion would provide more opportunities for students and employees.

While a coalition of community groups and business and religious leaders support the proposal, adopting the slogan, “more buses, more places, more often,” an opposition group, called Better Transit Now, asserts that the transit system could operate more efficiently by cutting staff and other costs.
