VANCOUVER — The Metro Vancouver bus drivers' union said in a recent news release that female bus drivers are regularly spat on and verbally and sexually harassed and, in the last five years, 90 female transit operators have been assaulted, reports The Vancouver Sun.
Ruth Armstrong, Canadian Auto Workers Union Local 111 women's committee chair, called for tougher sentences and stronger legislation. Stan Sierpina, vice president of customer service for Coast Mountain Bus Co. said he supports the union's goal. Coast Mountain, TransLink and the union are working together to stop assaults on women, by installing cameras, GPS systems and assault alarms on buses. For the full story, click here.
