The Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation (DRPT) and transportation partners from across the state are launching the third annual, statewide Try Transit Week from Sept. 20-24.
During Try Transit Week, Virginians are encouraged to stop driving alone and try one of the variety of transit options available such as bus and rail service, carpools, vanpools or telework.
Try Transit Week urges the use of transit in order to save money through reduced car and fuel costs and reduce highway congestion.
Residents who pledge to try a form of transit between Sept. 20-24 will be entered for a chance to win a year's free pass to the transit service of their choice and two round-trip tickets on Amtrak Virginia. Pledges can also help localities win the contest for the highest number of pledges.
Try Transit Week began in 2005 to promote transportation choice and alternatives to single occupant vehicle travel in Richmond. In 2008, DRPT expanded Try Transit Week to a statewide event.
The event educates Virginians about transportation options other than driving alone, and it seeks to increase participation in those options.
