Feds give $20M in grants to intercity bus industry
Funds expected to enhance security of over-the-road bus travel.
The Transportation Security Administration has infused $20 million into over-the-road bus security in the U.S., providing grants to 67 projects submitted by coach companies and industry associations. Grant funding will be used to address a wide variety of security needs, including driver protection, vehicle tracking and communications, passenger and baggage screening and security assessments. Applicants were required to detail specific vulnerabilities and the costs associated with securing them. Greyhound Lines in Dallas received a $5 million grant for enhancement of driver protection, which could include the installation of shields or isolation booths in its 2,300 coaches, according to Greyhound spokeswoman Kim Plaskett.
