In an effort to speed up bus traffic and cut congestion, the government of Ontario has approved the use of technology allowing provincial transit vehicles to shorten traffic signals. With traffic signal pre-emption technology, buses, streetcars and other transit maintenance vehicles can shorten a red, or lengthen a green traffic signal to their advantage when approaching an intersection. This technology is currently used by emergency vehicles. "This technology gets riders to their destinations more quickly," said Transportation Minister Harinder Takhar. Police will enforce the misuse of the technology and will ticket drivers $100 to $1,000 for using it in a vehicle not permitted to have this type of device installed.
