March 9 will mark the fifth anniversary of North County Transit District’s (NCTD) SPRINTER light rail system. Launched in 2008, the SPRINTER has become the backbone of east/west public transit in North County, serving 15 stations along a 22-mile route from Escondido to Oceanside.
“To commemorate this five-year milestone, NCTD will hold two events to recognize the hardworking individuals and entities that made the SPRINTER vision a reality,” said David Murphy, COO for NCTD. “It’s also a chance for us to express our heartfelt thanks to customers who have played such a big role in the SPRINTER’s success.”
The rail line has seen record-breaking ridership in recent months, with averages of over 10,000 passengers per weekday.
The celebration, which is open to the public, will highlight the SPRINTER’s past and present, while looking forward to the future. Train rides, interactive model train games, railroad history displays, music, raffles, and refreshments will all be part of the event’s activities. NCTD Board Chair and San Diego County Supervisor Bill Horn, San Diego Chapter of Habitat for Humanity Executive Director Lori Holt Pfeiler, and NCTD Executive Director Matthew O. Tucker will speak at this event. SPRINTER Hero Awards will be presented to project and community leaders who played crucial roles in developing the SPRINTER.
A second event will take place aboard two specially selected SPRINTER trains. The lucky passengers onboard will receive fun giveaways as a thank you for making the SRINTER a success.
