Unions representing California workers for Bay Area Rapid Transit, San Mateo County Transit and Alameda County Transit face end of the month deadlines to come up a new contract.
According to news reports in the area, current negotiations are still in the early stages, making two or more simultaneous strikes a possibility.
Such a strike could leave hundreds of thousands of commuters stranded, as about 600,000 people ride the three transit systems daily.
Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger would have the option to declare a 60-day cooling-off period in case of any labor walkout involving the transit systems.
The first comprehensive overhaul of SEPTA’s bus network will expand frequent service, add routes, and phase in changes through 2027.
